If you would like a document translated into French proceed as
follows:
1. Send me your document The first step is to send me the text, specifying all of the information that you believe to be useful for the translation (Who is the translation intended for? Is
it a for-information or a for-publication translation? Is there in-house terminology to respect?) Inform me of the time limit you wish me to abide by, but also consider that a good
translation takes time. My translations are not a literal transposition of every word as a machine would do. The objective is to produce a new text, flowing, in good French and with the
appropriate terminology. As a translator, I take time to research the appropriate information and to re-construct phrases into correct French. I ensure all translations are of the highest order
by revising all of my work thoroughly as to detect the smallest misprint.
2. I send you a quote I will send you a quote as soon as possible, with a proposal of price and a delivery date for the translated document.
3. You agree to the quote and I begin the procedure With your consent, I begin the translation process. First, I read the document and select the terminology, phraseology and, if necessary, the passages that could
pose problems for the translation. Then, I study the issue to ensure that I use the correct terms and the most relevant turn of phrases and to clarify some unfamiliar notions. Don’t be surprised
if I ask you some questions about the document. As I examine the original document in detail to ensure that the translation will be to the highest standard possible, occasionally I find
incoherences.
The next step is the translation itself. I am often obliged to completely change some sentences, to split them, add some words, suppress others, etc. Your text might look very different after the
translation, but you can be sure that the meaning and the impact on the French-speaking reader will be the same as that of the original document.
4. I check the quality The last step is the revision. I always reread my work, again and again, to verify the style, the syntax, the grammar and the spelling and to be sure there’s no
typing error left.
5. I send you the translated document As soon as the translation and the revision are finished, I will send you the translated document along with an invoice specifying all of the terms of payment. Do
not hesitate to pass comment or to ask questions about the translations. Communication is the only way to build a long lasting professional relationship.
